This ancient lost wax craft work has been protected under the geographical indication (GI) of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. It is listed in item 83 as “Bastar Dhokra” of the GI Act 1999 of the Government of India.

Needs the occasional dusting to keep cobwebs or dust from gathering. Use a dry, soft cloth to lightly rub off dust. It is emphasized that the cloth should be soft and clean, as a dirty or grimy rag will only cause damage.

Elephants hold an integral part of Indian mythology & culture. Revered in religion, it's a patron of intellectuality & sturdy earthy resilience. It's a sacred animal.
Elephants play a recurring theme in Buddhism. Buddhists revere the elephant they are worshipping so much are the qualities they wish to emulate. In Buddhist iconography, Queen Maya of Sakya dreamt of an elephant entering her womb & the next day she became pregnant with a child who grew up to become the Buddha. In his previous lifetime, he was the Vessantara, Prince of Sivi, who had in his stables a magical elephant that drew rain clouds wherever it went. And so when there was a drought in Kalinga, the elephant drew in the rain.
